Three new CPT codes has been added in integumentary system. These codes will be used from 1st January 2023 by medical coders. The new codes are added for removal of sutures and/or staples not requiring anesthesia. These codes should be used along with E/M codes. CPT code 15853 and 15854 will be used for coding for removal of sutures and/or staples exam from 2023. Also we have one more new CPT code 15778 for implantation of mesh or other prosthesis for delayed closure of defect. We will learn more about these procedure codes codes below in detail.
Description of CPT code 15778, 15853 and 15854
15778 Implantation of absorbable mesh or other prosthesis for delayed closure of defect(s) (ie, external genitalia, perineum, abdominal wall) due to soft tissue infection or trauma
15853 Removal of sutures or staples not requiring anesthesia (List separately in addition to E/M code)
15854 Removal of sutures and staples not requiring anesthesia (List separately in addition to E/M code)
CPT code 15850 describing the removal of sutures under anesthesia, has been deleted
Do and Don’t with CPT code 15778, 15853 and 15854
For repair of anorectal fistula with plug [eg, porcine small intestine submucosa {SIS}], use CPT code 46707
For insertion of mesh or other prosthesis for repair of pelvic floor defect, always use CPT code 57267
For implantation of non-biologic or synthetic implant for fascial reinforcement of the abdominal wall, always use code 0437T
